The Ocean Project
The Plastics Industry Development Center (PIDC), a research and development institution founded by the government and the plastic associations, has launched the Ocean Glasses Campaign, designed to increase the use of waste fishnets. The focus is on preserving what is left of our marine ecology by working hand-in-hand with consumer product manufacturers to raise public awareness in ocean conservation.

June 2017, PIDC and Problue co-hosted a sea-bed and beach cleanup event at Houbihu, Kenting. More than a hundred participants signed up for the event to gather and rid wastes from under the sea and on the beach. As a post cleanup activity, the gathered wastes were sorted and recorded according to the International Coastal Cleanup guidance. That was the first step of the Campaign.

For the second step of the project, old fishing nets were converted into nylon pellets. With countless tries and adjustments, the Sustainable Design Team of the PIDC cooperated with industrial manufacturers and successfully crafted a series of process steps to turn the recycled pellets into Taiwan's first Ocean sunglasses.
